Our Mission

A source of truth for fasting — body, mind, and spirit

Fasting is one of the oldest, most studied tools for human health. FaithFast gathers the science, the Scripture, and lived experience in one trustworthy place — and helps you take the next step.

The Science

Fasting works down to the cellular level — autophagy, insulin sensitivity, inflammation, brain health. We translate the research into plain language you can act on.

The Scripture

From Moses on Sinai to Jesus in the wilderness to the early church in Acts, fasting is woven through the biblical story. We honor that heritage.

The Wellbeing

Health is more than the absence of disease. Fasting touches body, mind, and spirit — energy, clarity, discipline, and dependence on what sustains us.

The Welcome

All are welcome — Christian or curious, beginner or seasoned. We meet you where you are and walk beside you, not above you.

“But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”
Matthew 6:17–18 (ESV)

Notice Jesus said "when you fast" — not "if." Fasting was an assumed rhythm of the devoted life.

Our Story

A family's fifteen-year journey back to health

FaithFast was born from a family — not a clinic, not a corporation. Our parents, lifelong Christians and members of a Bible-based congregation, began paying real attention to their health around 2010. What started as curiosity became a calling.

Over fifteen years they have lived holistic, natural, and functional health — organic foods, fresh produce, sunlight, chiropractic and massage, functional bloodwork, and the honest work of researching vaccines, NSAIDs, and prescriptions rather than accepting the first answer. Then, a little over a year ago, they added the combination that changed everything: intermittent fasting paired with a daily cup of yerba mate. The results — energy, bloodwork, weight, clarity — have been tremendous. We built FaithFast to share what they have learned, and to walk with you on the same path.

Organic & whole foods

Organic, local, unprocessed whenever possible — food as the first medicine.

Sunlight & fresh air

Morning light, daily walks, time outside — the oldest, free prescriptions.

Functional medicine

Bloodwork read for the root — hormones, deficiencies, dysfunction, not symptoms.

Informed & cautious

Researching vaccines, NSAIDs, and prescriptions — never accepting the first answer blindly.

Biblical Roots

Fasting is older than every modern diet — and it is everywhere in Scripture

Long before laboratories and longevity researchers, fasting was practiced by shepherds, kings, prophets, and apostles. Here are eight of the most striking examples from the biblical record.

An ancient scroll, olive branch, and clay oil lamp on rustic wood

“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

Matthew 4:4 (ESV) · Jesus, quoting Deuteronomy, while fasting

Moses
Exodus 34:28
40 days & 40 nights

On Mount Sinai, Moses neither ate bread nor drank water as he received the Ten Commandments — a fast of total dependence on God.

Fasting sharpens spiritual clarity and dependence on the divine.

Jesus
Matthew 4:2
40 days & 40 nights

Before beginning His public ministry, Jesus fasted in the wilderness. It was in that weakened, surrendered state that He resisted temptation and emerged prepared.

Fasting prepares us for our life's most important work.

Daniel
Daniel 10:3
21 days

Daniel engaged in a partial fast — no choice food, no meat, no wine — for three weeks of mourning and seeking understanding. He also fasted from the king's rich foods in his youth (Daniel 1:8–16).

Partial fasting and dietary discipline have ancient precedent.

Esther
Esther 4:16
3 days, day & night

Facing the genocide of her people, Queen Esther called for a total fast — herself, her attendants, and all the Jews of Susa. Courage followed consecration.

Fasting is a prelude to decisive, courageous action.

David
2 Samuel 12:16–22
7 days

David fasted and lay all night on the ground, pleading for his sick child. Fasting was his language of earnest, heart-deep prayer.

Fasting gives physical weight to our deepest prayers.

Paul
2 Corinthians 11:27
frequently

The apostle Paul listed hunger and thirst and fasting among the regular hardships of his ministry. Fasting was woven into the rhythm of his life and work.

Fasting can become a sustainable, lifelong rhythm — not a one-time event.

Ezra
Ezra 8:21–23
a time of fasting

Before a dangerous journey, Ezra proclaimed a fast at the Ahava Canal to seek a safe path from God. He was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers, choosing instead to trust God visibly.

Fasting is a public declaration of trust before uncertain roads.

Anna
Luke 2:37
decades

The prophetess Anna worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer, and was granted to recognize the infant Jesus in the temple. A lifetime of devotion, sustained by fasting.

A fasting life cultivates long-arc spiritual vision.

The Science

What actually happens in your body when you fast

Fasting is not deprivation — it is a signal. When you stop eating, your body switches from storing to repairing. Here is what the research shows, hour by hour and cell by cell.

Autophagy

Fasting triggers autophagy — your cells' internal recycling system, which clears damaged proteins and organelles. Yoshinori Ohsumi won the 2016 Nobel Prize for illuminating this process.

Insulin Sensitivity

Time without food lowers circulating insulin, helping cells recover their responsiveness. Lower, steadier insulin is one of the most powerful levers for metabolic health.

Human Growth Hormone

Fasting can multiply natural HGH levels several fold, supporting muscle preservation and fat mobilization — without any outside intervention.

Inflammation

Markers of systemic inflammation (like CRP) tend to fall with regular fasting. Chronic inflammation is now understood as a root of most modern disease.

Brain Health

Fasting raises BDNF — brain-derived neurotrophic factor — which supports the growth and protection of neurons. Ketones produced in fasting are clean fuel for the brain.

Fat Oxidation

After glycogen is depleted, the body shifts to burning stored fat for fuel. Fasting teaches your metabolism to switch freely between fuel sources — metabolic flexibility.

Nobel Prize, 2016. Yoshinori Ohsumi was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering the mechanisms of autophagy — the very process fasting switches on.

The fasting timeline

A snapshot of what unfolds hour by hour when you stop eating.

  1. 1
    0–12h

    Glycogen phase

Insulin rises with your meal, then falls. The body burns glucose and runs on stored liver glycogen.

  2. 2
    12–16h

    Fat burning begins

Glycogen runs low. Glucagon rises. The body mobilizes stored fat and begins producing ketones.

  3. 3
    16–24h

    Autophagy ramps

Cellular cleanup accelerates — damaged proteins are recycled. Insulin stays low; inflammation falls.

  4. 4
    24–72h

    Deep ketosis & reset

Ketones fuel body and brain, HGH rises to spare muscle, and the immune system begins to turn over.

Fasting Protocols

Find the rhythm that fits your life

There is no single ‘right’ way to fast. The best protocol is the one you can sustain. Here are the most common patterns, from gentle to advanced — start where you are and let your body lead.

16:8

16 hr fast · 8 hr eating window

Beginner

The most popular starting point. Skip breakfast, eat between noon and 8pm (or shift the window to suit your life). Sustainable for nearly everyone.

Best for

First-time fasters, daily maintenance, busy schedules

18:6

18 hr fast · 6 hr eating window

Moderate

A step up from 16:8 that nudges the body deeper into fat-burning and autophagy. Often reached naturally as appetite adjusts.

Best for

Metabolic goals, breaking a plateau

20:4 (Warrior)

20 hr fast · 4 hr eating window

Advanced

Inspired by the ancient warrior diet. Undereating during the day, one large evening meal. Demands nutrient-density and intention.

Best for

Experienced fasters, deep cellular work

5:2

5 normal days · 2 low-calorie days

Moderate

Eat normally five days a week; on two non-consecutive days, limit to ~500–600 calories. A gentler alternative for those who dislike daily windows.

Best for

Variety seekers, those who dislike daily fasting

OMAD

One Meal A Day

Advanced

A 23:1 pattern — one substantial, nutrient-dense meal per day. Powerful but requires careful meal construction to avoid deficiencies.

Best for

Seasoned fasters, simplified routines

Extended (36–72h)

1 to 3 full days

Advanced

Prolonged fasts that maximize autophagy and metabolic reset. Should be approached gradually, with preparation and — ideally — guidance.

Best for

Periodic deep reset (quarterly), with support

Fasting Support

Support the fast — don't just survive it

For over a year, our family has paired intermittent fasting with a simple daily cup of yerba mate (and a fiber blend before meals). Fasting is the foundation; these supports make the foundation easier to hold — an option, not an obligation.

Yerba Mate

An ancient South American herb

A naturally caffeinated, sugar-free herbal brew that delivers clean focus, steady energy, and gentle appetite support through the fasting window — without breaking the fast.

  • Supports mental clarity & mood
  • Helps curb hunger during fasts
  • No sugar, no calories — fast-friendly

A Fiber + Plant Sterol Blend

Pre-meal metabolic support

A simple blend of soluble fiber and plant sterols taken before meals to slow glucose absorption and support healthy cholesterol — a quiet helper alongside your eating window.

  • Supports glucose balance
  • Promotes healthy cholesterol
  • Feeds a healthy gut microbiome

What our family has experienced

Over a year pairing yerba mate with fasting:

Steadier energy through the morning fast
Fewer cravings and easier fasting windows
Improved glucose and lipid markers
A sustainable rhythm — not a battle of willpower

These are our family's personal results. Individual results vary, and nothing here is medical advice.

A simple daily rhythm

The rhythm we follow is plain: yerba mate in the morning, a fiber blend before meals, and a daily fasting window. Eat the foods you love — within your window — and let the combination quietly rebalance your metabolism.

How to Start

Five steps to a fasting life

You do not need to overhaul your life overnight. Fasting is a return to a natural rhythm. Here is the path we recommend — gentle, sustainable, and built to last.

01

Anchor your why

Health, healing, discipline, dependence on God, longevity for your family — name the real reason you're fasting. A clear why carries you through the hard mornings.

02

Start with sunrise

Begin with a 12-hour overnight fast — dinner to breakfast. Add an hour each week. Let your body teach you its rhythm before you push it.

03

Fuel the window

What you eat matters as much as when. Whole foods, healthy fats, clean protein, plenty of plants. Organic and local when you can. Break your fast gently.

04

Support the fast

Hydration, electrolytes, sunlight, movement, sleep. A morning cup of yerba mate and a pre-meal fiber blend can ease the transition and extend the benefits.

05

Walk with others

Fasting is ancient and communal — Moses had the mountain, the early church had each other. Don't do it alone. Share the journey, ask questions, get guidance.
